Communicating About GMO’s

Biotechnology is complicated. But it’s an important technology that allows farmers to produce more food with fewer pesticides, in a way that offers more protection for the environment. Farmers see it as an important tool in the larger goal of feeding a growing world population.

Some consumers see it as something to avoid. In the extreme, it’s blamed for cancer and other medical conditions. There’s a call to label foods produced using biotechnology.

This event features two scientists who work in this area:

– Dr. Tom Hoegemeyer is a University of Nebraska Adjunct Professor in Agronomy and Horticulture. But first he is a plant breeder in his family business, Hoegemeyer Hybrids.

– Dr. Tom Clemente is a Biotechnology Professor at the University of Nebraska Center for Plant Science Innovation.

– Kim Lang is Social Media Lead for the Global Farmer Network, a non-profit that engages in telling the story of ag in order that farmers be allowed to retain their technology tools.

Moderator Randy Happel, of Bader Rutter, is a long-time ag PR practitioner.
